I use windows as client and *nix as server but the problem is first off that my normal client won't authenticate to FreeBSD 5.3 (I think it has something to do with keyboard interactive mode?) so I switched to the suggested solution WinSCP and it transferred a 700 Mb file in 6 minutes in SFTP mode and in SCP mode that was looking at 30 minutes.
